National E-Security Awareness Week

The use of the internet has spread considerably over the years with more and more Australians using computers in the home as well as their business. That's why it's more important than ever that we understand the risks and exercise common sense when we're online.

National Security Awareness Week is an educational initiative that has been organised by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA) on behalf of the Australian Government to help protect and educate all users on how to stay smart online. Senator the Hon. Helen Coonan
Minister for Communications, Information Technology and the Arts
Deputy Leader of the Government in the Senate

"National E-Security Awareness week runs from 23 to 27 October 2006 and consists of a series of events throughout the country to inform Australians of practical tips they can use to Stay Smart Online.

To help Australians Stay Smart Online the Government launched a website - to provide a useful source of advice on how to protect yourself, your family and your business from online threats.

National E-Security Awareness week is the result of close collaboration between Government, industry and community organisations. Online security is an issue that affects all of us. In particular, I would like to thank eBay for the time and commitment they have given to developing and participating in the Awareness Week and to ensuring that the Internet remains a useful, productive and safe resource for all Australians."

To help you feel confident shopping safely online, we've developed a guide that tells you what you need to know about protecting yourself and your family from online threats. Find out more about our Web Smart guide.

1. Get to know your seller - review the seller's feedback rating to understand their trading history and online reputation.

2. Shop safely by using PayPal - this online payment service keeps your account information private.

3. Never use Western Union, Money Gram or other instant wire transfer systems to pay for your items.

4. Use a reputable escrow service like Escrow Australia when purchasing high value items like jewellery and artwork.

5. Follow eBay safe trading guidelines - eBay's Security Centre is packed with useful safe shopping tips and information.

6. Don't trade off eBay.com.au - responding to requests to trade off eBay can expose you to scams by unscrupulous dealers.
